Here is my journey to Coaching...
I didn't choose coaching, rather, it chose me.
When I was a little girl I remember thinking about my life's purpose. I have this memory of being 5 and sitting on a bench at my elementary school and looking up into the sky and asking God/Universe, "What is my purpose?" "What am I supposed to do to help people?" "Why do I have to wait?" I knew as a child that I had a purpose to serve in this life and I was excited and eager to get to that purpose, but I was only 5 so I had a while to wait. I knew one thing though, it had to be about helping people. That was the only thing I knew for certain. I also had a reoccuring dream about a Cheetah between the ages of 5-6 and became completely obsessed with going to Africa one day and seeing all the amazing animals on safari. At 5, this became my #1 bucket list item, and it never changed ranked throughout my entire life...
Life goes on and I was successful at many things: school, music, singing, starting my own business, inside sales, outside sales, corporate leadership, African dancing & drumming, research science, and even manual labor. While I was successful at all of these things, I never felt truly satisfied or fulfilled. Throughout my adult life there were several people that would comment that I'd make a really great Life & Business coach. Each time this happened I would laugh and brush off what they said thinking, "why would anyone want to listen to me? My life isn't all figured out!" Then I'd forget about it and go back to the job at hand enjoying it, but not feeling totally fulfilled.
Life took a drastic turn at my corporate job when my boss died unexpectedly. Things at work had already been tough due to a recent buyout, but the moment that he died, my life changed forever. I hadn't just lost a boss, but also a mentor and a dear friend. The next couple of months were crazy, I was literally working 16 hour days, 6 days a week trying to stay on top of everything now that my plate was even more full after his passing. I had planned a trip to Hawaii many months prior to my bosses passing for an African Dance Camp. I desperately needed that vacation and during that trip just 1 1/2 months after my boss had passed a new path opened up to me. When I was in Hawaii away from all of the stress and surrounded by beauty and fun, I realized how truly unhappy I had been for a while in my corporate job and that I couldn't keep doing it forever. It was one of those moments that you can't look back from, that you can't forget. Once your perception shifts... if shifts forever. I realized that something else had to be in my future. I shared my epiphany with 2 of my friends who were with me at dance camp and here is what they each said, "Tabitha I keep telling you you'd make an amazing Coach helping people with business and life," and the other one said, "If I had your job, I would save up your money for a year and then travel the world." I look back on this singular moment and smile because guess what...
I did both!
I went back to work with the thought of saving up some money for an amazing trip of a lifetime. We all talk about traveling after high school or college. I had talked about it with my sister and a few of my friends, but life and school, and work happens and before we know it we realize we never went. I realized that this was my opportunity of a lifetime and being a leader at a corporate job could afford me that chance. While my friend had suggested saving up for a year, I lasted 6 more months before something really terrible happened. The company I was working for had finally hired a replacement for my boss. The person they had hired had been there only a few weeks when all the sales managers were one by one called into private meeting and told that we were over paid and that our salaries would be cut by 40%! Um what??? We were also told that we would have to work more hours. I reminded this new guy that we had all been working crazy hours for the last 6+ months since our boss had died. I myself had hired a personal assistant in order to just barely function as a normal human being working 16 hour days, 6 days a week. He said that we needed to work 7 then... I remember the world seeming to stop for a moment...How could this be real? How could this be possible? I went to work the next day numb. Thank goodness it was a Friday. Saturday morning at 8am I sat on my couch and opened up my laptop to begin another 16 hour day and I started at my screen for a few minutes, watching my cursor blinking, awaiting my password...and just like that, I shut my screen and knew I was done. This chapter had closed and it was time to start a new chapter. When we are ready the Universe/God and the people around us respond in kind. The very next morning I woke up ready to explore the African Art Village which only came through once a year with the Gem and Mineral show which Tucson is internationally know for. I met up with that same friend who told me to save my money and go travel the world to explore the beautiful art and the musical drums that awaited. We bumped into one of our Master Drummer friends who said he was taking a group into Africa in 4 weeks to study drumming and dancing with the local tribe. My heart broke and I knew that I had to go, I had to do the thing that scared me the most and fulfill a lifelong dream to go to Africa. The next day I gave my new boss my two weeks notice, feeling completely calm and sure that I was making the right choice. He said he understood and asked me of my plans. I told him I was buying a one way ticket to Africa and I had my first 4 weeks planned out but nothing after that. That was ok, I needed to learn to face my deepest fear and let go and trust.
4 weeks later...I had said goodbye to my family, my friends, my home, and left for Africa on a one way ticket... To make a really, REALLY long story short, here are a few highlights but you can read about my entire journey in my book Serendipity that will be coming soon. I was in Africa for 4 months and traveled through Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South African, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. During that time I laughed, I cried, I danced, I drummed, I made a lot of friends, I made a few enemies, I almost died of Malaria, my travels took me to Germany and the Caribbean after that, followed by a road trip with my 78 year old Grandma through Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and then home to say goodbye to my dying father. All of these things and more laid the foundation of who I am today and all of which makes me an good Coach.
